A while ago, we made a list of the Top 10 Classic Movies of All Time and before then we took a closer look at the most infamous casino scene from Dr No, one of the earliest James Bond movies. Both posts became quite popular over the past few months, even though we haven’t been updating the website much since then. Perhaps this is due to the quarantining and self isolation? We can only speculate.
But it would make sense, given how many people are missing the dazzling glamour of casinos now closed due to the virus. Some casino fans have turned to the vast seas of online casinos to get a taste of the old casino experience they were used to. It can be a confusing landscape to those who are used to land based casinos. Players often require the help of websites who review online casinos and sportsbooks. Nothing really compares to the genuine casino experience of a land based casino, so others are instead diving head first into the world of casino themed movies.
We took the best of our two most popular articles and came up with this one. Very creative, we know. Nonetheless, we hope it will be an inspiring read. So, without further ado, we would like to offer you our top 3 best casino movies of all time!
3. Casino (1995)
Starring: Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods
Two friends decide to launch their very own gambling venture in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sam “Ace” Rothstein (played by Robert de Niro) is the casino manager for “Tangiers”, a fictional casino. His job is to oversee the hotel and casino rooms, pamper the high rollers and deal with rule breakers and cheaters. But in reality he is mostly just the figurehead that enables the two friends to launder their money and get away with murder. Quite literally. This movie is a real Hollywood classic. Whenever you put Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in the same room, you know its going to get heated. And violent.
2. Casino Royale (2006)
Starring: Daniel Craig, Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green
This is movie marks the beginning of James Bond’s career, even though the movie is not that old compared to Dr No and the like. It is brought to Bond’s attention that an international terror financier, Le Chiffre, is plotting to destroy a prototype jumbo jet with explosives in order to gain an upper hand on the stock market. James Bond puts a halt to Le Chiffre’s plan, forcing him to find a different way to make up for his massive losses. Of course, he chooses to organize a high stakes, VIP Texas Hold’em tournament at the Casino Royale. It’s a Bond movie, what did you expect? This is easily one of the best Bond movies to date and the theme song, sung by late Chris Cornell, is also very memorable.
1. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, and many more!
In the world of music there are so called super groups. Bands formed by legendary artists from different bands that come together to create something unique. If there is a supergroup in the movie world, nothing comes closer than Ocean’s Eleven. Based on the Rat Pack movie with the same name, the remake from 2001 oozes effortless swagger from start to finish. A group of low level conmen, pickpockets and thieves join forces to complete the biggest heist in recorded history. With the leadership of Danny Ocean (George Clooney) they plan to hit the Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand all at the same time. Danny’s ex-wife is now living with his nemesis Terry Benedict who just so happens to be the manager of all of the three casinos. This heist just became personal. Will they pull it off or go to jail? There’s only one way to find out!
There it is, our top three best casino themed movies of all time. You might argue the list should be shuffled and maybe you think there are other movies more deserving of the top spot. Let us know what you think and perhaps we will write part 2 soon!
