There is a danger of actors becoming pigeonholed especially if they become known for one prominent role. Something that is becoming more popular and helps evade this issue is an increasingly bigger market for those who venture into the world of voice acting for computer games.
One of the best examples of a situation like this is Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars Trilogy.
Hamill was revered for the part he played, but he became so synonymous with the character that he played that he didn’t get any other major movie roles. His counterpart Carrie Fisher ventured into the world of script writing, while Harrison Ford took on various blockbuster roles. Hamill on the other hand, went into computer game acting and voice overs, appearing in the long-running developing series Wing Commander, featuring a future war between earth and the planet of Kilrah.
Hewlett has avoided all of this by turning his creative energies towards writing movies, scripts and directing. There is literally not much that the English born Canadian actor has not tried his hand at, and doing voice acting on computer games is another avenue that has brought him some success.
He played characters in Serous Sam, The Second Encounter in 2002. He also played the character of Mudokons in Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty in 2014 and did additional voices in Caretaker Sacrifice and Caretaker Retribution in 2016.
With his serious voice and behind the camera presence, he has also narrated several programs and documentaries.
He is indeed a man of many talents and although his primary interest is in science fiction, there is nothing that he seemingly cannot take in his stride. Far from being pigeon hold, David Hewlett has gone from strength to strength and is always unfazed by any new project that he turns his hand to. He has avoided anything cliche and continues to push the boundaries with new ideas.
